Recent Work - 2021
All the work in this exhibition, apart from the short series Lesbia’s Pet Bird, follows closely in theme and content the pictures shown at Abbott and Holder in May last year. The only difference here is that since there was considerable technical experimentation during this period, I thought it sensible to work on a smaller scale; so there are fewer large pictures in the present show. As usual, the titles are mainly there to aid identification of individual pieces.
Lesbia’s Pet Bird
This series was prompted by a famous lyric by the Roman poet Catullus, who complains that his girlfriend, Lesbia, is more enamoured of her pet sparrow than himself. The interaction of bird and human figure has, over the years, cropped up sporadically in some of my work, but not before now, I think, as a distinct series.
